about

After the polyphonic and polyrhythmic work on my album ‘Process 3’ where I was using up to ten separate instruments per track, with both midi, live play and computer layering, I was drawn to the simplicity of drone music, where I could explore the interaction between frequencies and the tension between different notes without getting sidetracked my rhythmic and structural considerations. The Korg CS3 draw bar organ with it’s rich and pure tone was the perfect instrument. Each draw bar has a gradation of overtones and there is a wealth of range and depth to the sound, from the sine-wave simplicity of the 8inch to the piercing 2inch and the booming 16inch draws. I used lead fishing sinkers wrapped in gaffer tape as weights to hold down single and multi notes which left my hands free to operate the draw bars and guitar effects in real time. After a brief late night session, I pushed record and 24 minutes later pushed stop. After a few days listening to the ensuing drone on my way to and from work, I decided that, since It was on the same keyboard stand, I would add in some extra colour with a take on the Jupiter 4. While the organ alone was very engrossing, I feel that the sound of the Jupiter has enhanced the drone with it’s own powerful personality.
This is really good music for driving. It changes slowly and subtly over time and takes the listener on an inner sonic journey. Perhaps not recommended for peak hour traffic.

Equipment:
Korg CS3 Analog draw bar organ, EHX Small Stone phaser, Blue Sky Reverb, T-Rex Tremster, Roland CS30 Delay, Roland Jupiter 4, fishing sinker drone weights..

Largely fuelled by the sore lack of live venues in Australia for electronic music and a lack of options for releasing recorded material, Clan Analogue was born out of necessity. ... more
